If you're running an APT-based system such Ubuntu, Debian, or Raspberry Pi OS, you can type the command sudo apt install sqlite3. You can try running the sqlite3 command, but if you get an error, it means you need to install it. If you're running Linux, you may need to install SQLite using your package manager. If you're running something older than that, you may find it challenging to run SQLite on your computer, but you can always try compiling it from source. macOS 10.4 and higher should include SQLite3. If you're on a Mac and you don't have SQLite, it means you're running a very old version of macOS. You can just type sqlite3 and any arguments at the command line and you'll be up and running. If you're using a Mac, you already have SQLite installed. Close that, close that, and now the next time you open a command prompt, it will pick up the new environment variables. Locate your path, edit it, and add a new entry to it. You can go to the Control Panel, choose User Accounts, User Accounts again, and then click Change my environment variables. If you're going to be interacting with SQLite from the command prompt or if programs you're using need to locate the SQLite DLL or command-line tool, you'll want to add that directory to your path. I've just done that for the DLL and its DEF file, and now I'll do the same for the tools. Next, I'll open that directory up and then open up each of the ZIP files and copy anything in there into that directory. I usually like to create a SQLite directory in the top level of my C drive, so I'm going to go ahead and do that right now. I'm going to download both of those ZIP files right now and show you how to install them. In most cases, you'll want the 64-bit version of the DLL and, well, the 32-bit version of the command-line tools because they're the only ones available. Scroll down until you find Precompiled Binaries for Windows. To install SQLite on Windows, go to /download.html. This is done to keep the code free of copyrights. ![]() ![]() The lack of a license means that you don't have anything that you can show to your legal department to prove that you have a right to use it, but if you need a warranty of title, the SQLite project will sell you one to make this easier. This makes it quite different than other open-source software. This means there's no copyright, which means there's no license. SQLite, although it's open source, it's also public domain software. It's distributed as a library as well as a command-line interface that lets you send commands to the database engine. SQLite is an open-source database engine.
